Why Our Training Is Important

Accident Prevention

Students learn defensive-driving methods, safe following distances, speed control, roadway awareness, hazard recognition, emergency maneuvers, skid recovery and collision avoidance.

Lawful Operator Responsibility

Operators must understand licensing, registration, insurance, vehicle condition, passenger protection, traffic laws, accident reporting and the legal responsibilities that apply wherever they travel.

Law-Enforcement and Traffic-Stop Training

Traffic stops can become stressful. Our training teaches operators how to remain calm, avoid unnecessary escalation, communicate respectfully, preserve important facts and address disagreements through proper administrative or court procedures.

1. Pull over safely. Stop promptly in a reasonably safe location, place the vehicle in park and activate hazard lights when appropriate.

2. Keep hands visible. Avoid sudden movements and advise the officer before reaching for documents.

3. Communicate calmly. Listen carefully, speak respectfully and avoid threats, obstruction, physical resistance or roadside arguments.

4. Present required documents. Provide licensing, registration, insurance and other documents required under applicable law.

5. State objections respectfully. A person may calmly state that they do not consent to a search while continuing to follow lawful instructions.

6. Document the encounter afterward. Record the date, time, location, agency, citation number, witnesses and a factual description of what occurred.

Important safety principle: The roadside is generally not the proper place to argue constitutional, jurisdictional or evidentiary issues. Protect everyone’s safety, document the facts and pursue disagreements through proper legal procedures.

Responsibilities of the Operator

• Maintain lawful authorization to operate the vehicle.
• Maintain registration, insurance and required documents.
• Inspect brakes, lights, tires, mirrors and safety equipment.
• Secure passengers, children, animals, equipment and cargo.
• Do not operate while impaired, dangerously fatigued or distracted.
• Follow speed, right-of-way, cellphone and equipment laws.
• Stop after a collision and complete required reporting.
• Carry emergency contacts and roadside supplies.
• Understand that tribal membership or an academy certificate does not automatically exempt an operator from generally applicable traffic laws.

Court Challenges and Proper Legal Procedures

When legal action becomes necessary, an operator should follow all court deadlines, preserve evidence, request records properly and obtain qualified legal assistance when necessary.

Review the Citation or Notice

Read every citation, summons, warning, crash report or towing notice. Identify the alleged offense, court, response deadline and appearance date.

Preserve Evidence

Save photographs, video, dash-camera recordings, receipts, repair records, maps, witness information and copies of every legal document.

Request Available Records

When legally available, request police reports, body-camera footage, dash-camera footage, photographs, dispatch records and relevant equipment records through the appropriate procedure.

Prepare a Factual Presentation

Organize events chronologically, separate facts from assumptions and identify the evidence and witnesses supporting the case.

Seek Qualified Legal Counsel

Serious charges, arrests, injury collisions, searches, license suspensions and constitutional claims should be reviewed by a licensed attorney familiar with the governing jurisdiction.
